Part IV My Views
Everybody in America is entitled to their own opinions, and with that comes arguments, debates, and heated discussions. When there is people that desire gun control laws there is always people that oppose gun control laws or just gun control period. Many say that the gun laws are unconstitutional to our second amendment right. The second amendment of the constitution of the United States, states that A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. By setting stricter gun laws our constitutional right is being stripped from Americans and many are afraid they will get stricter and stricter until the second amendment right is not longer a right.
There is many misunderstandings about guns and gun control. For one, many believe the more guns in America the more crime, but “America has had a remarkable decrease in violent crime and gun crime in the US since the early 1990s, even though the number of firearms has increased by about 10 million every year”(Davidson). Also another quote basically saying the same thing “There’s no simple correspondence between the number of firearms in private hands and the amount of gun crime, and I often find it somewhat strange that there seems to be a perception that things are worse than ever when, in reality, things are really better than they’ve been for decades”(Davidson). Yes America had a lot of guns but if that doesn't reflect the amount of deaths than its not a bad thing at all, people are exercising their second amendment right and that is all.
Many people want a ban of assault weapons. They believe that by banning these firearms the outcome will be less or no mass shootings in America. The only problem with that is if a person is that psychotic they will find a way and use different guns or another weapon that could be worse than guns. Criminals don't follow the laws either. If a criminal wants a weapon they can get it by all the gun smuggling in America, all they have to do is go the the black market. That's not the only way criminals get guns “Wachtel says one of the most common ways criminals get guns is through straw purchase sales. A straw purchase occurs when someone who may not legally acquire a firearm, or who wants to do so anonymously, has a companion buy it on their behalf”(Wachtel). This proves that banning guns from certain people doesn't help they just get someone that can get them the weapons to do so for them.
The biggest reason most people own guns is for protection and the security of having a powerful weapon. “A national survey finds that nearly half of gun owners (48%) volunteer that the main reason they own a gun is for protection”(Masci). By banning guns the government is taking away a lot of people's sense of protection.
The Last topic I want to cover about the pro gun argument is the 18th amendment. You may say woah thats not even about gun laws that's about prohibition. But I am going to tell you why it is so relatable to thes topic of gun control and gun laws and all the arguments about firearms. When prohibition started in on January 17, 1920 “the public responded in a way that neither the temperance movement nor the politicians had expected—few people heeded the criminalization, and those who had been manufacturing alcohol continued doing so regardless of the law. Everyone seemed haughtily recalcitrant and alcohol use flourished even more than before. The police around the country were woefully ineffective in curbing its production, sale, or consumption” (FlameHorse). Why is this quote apart of a gun control argument, well because if America banned guns or assault weapons America would react the same way as we did in the 1920s. But instead of selling alcohol they will be selling weapons.
